Dr. Rae Huang, OD, knew she wanted to be an eye doctor since she was 12 years old. Inspired by her mother, a world-renowned ophthalmologist and researcher, Dr. Huang developed a lifelong passion for evidence-based eye care. After seeing parents rely on online influencers instead of peer-reviewed research, she founded PreventativeEyeCare.com to promote preventive eye health.

Dr. Huang earned her Master of Science in Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry degree from the SUNY College of Optometry, graduating with honors, and her undergraduate degree from Boston University, graduating magna cum laude with double majors in Biology and Psychology. She specializes in preventive eye care, including orthokeratology for myopia management, custom scleral lenses, vision therapy, and advanced dry eye treatment. She holds the International Academy Certification in Myopia Management and serves as a Change Agent for the American Optometric Association's Myopia Collective.

Outside the office, she enjoys rock climbing, singing, figure skating, skiing, and playing Fortnite with her three children.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:

  • How childhood myopia has become a global epidemic affecting nearly half of the world's population.
  • Why traditional single-vision glasses and soft contact lenses do not slow myopia progression.
  • That higher levels of myopia significantly increase the lifetime risk of serious sight-threatening eye diseases.
  • How orthokeratology lenses reshape the cornea overnight to provide clear daytime vision without glasses.
  • Why early myopia management can help protect long-term vision and reduce future eye health risks.
  • That orthokeratology functions like braces or retainers by guiding healthy eye growth over time.
  • How preventive eye care can improve lifelong vision instead of simply correcting worsening prescriptions.
  • Why parents should understand the long-term impact of childhood myopia before choosing treatment options.
  • That modern myopia management is transforming eye care from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.
  • How evidence-based strategies can help children preserve healthier vision for years to come.
